Family Tree

Under construction

This website contains research on the family name Varwijk as it is found in Montferland region situated in the east of the Netherlands.

The webpages were based on the reception of a large A2 version of the Varwijk family tree that was the result of research by John Thoben and Ben Herfkens. They had been asked to research the Varwijk history as it was believed that in 1983 the Varwijk wood manufacturers were based in the town of Zeddam for 250 years.

Allongside the printed version of the family tree they have written a small booklet "250 jaar Varwijk Zeddam" in which not only the family history but also the history of the company was portrayed.

Since August 2007 I have started to investigate the family tree. The reasons for this were diverse. First of all the family tree ended in the early 20th century and therefore two or more generations were missing. Secondly it covered only a limited group of people and there were and are more Varwijk to be found.

Thus far I have been able to extend the original 200 names to a database of over 1300. Geographically they are concentrated in a the north and eastern provinces of the Netherlands and the adjacent areas of Germany. The area in Germany is most likely the origin of all the Varwijk. This however still has to be proven.

The oldest mention of a Varwijk, I have found, dates back to Dieterich Ferwick, born around 1620 in Alt-Rhede (D). The succeeding homestead can still be found and is mentioned on local maps.

This webside is currently under construction as it will be translated into english, to enhance international accesibility, and at the same time the content will be updated.
